The Department of Tourism Goa, Government of Goa, is instrumental in planning and providing the basic tourist infrastructure and other tourist facilities/amenities as well as promoting Goa as a round the year tourist destination by participating in various tourist related events in India and overseas and through tourist publicity literature and other publications. It also exercises control over hotels and travel trade activities through regulatory measures, under the Goa Registration of Tourist Trade Act, 1982
Over the yars, the tourist arrivals into Goa has grown to about 1.2 millions annually almost corresponding to the population of the State of Goa.
The Goa Tourism Development Corporation Limited Goa was set up wayback in 1982 for the sole purpose of running commercial activities of the Departmental including accommodation units, sight-seeing tours and cruises for the benefit of tourists in the low and middle income groups who constitute bulk of the tourist traffic to Goa.

The Beginning of Goa Tourism Development Corporation Goa
The commercial activity of the Directorate of Tourism Goa had to be run on commercial lines and needed flexibility in its working. The Government therefore, decided to set-up the Goa Tourism Development Corporation Limited Goa which was incorporated on 30th March 1982 as a Public Limited Company Goa under the Indian Companies Act, 1956.
The Company has Memorandum & Articles of Association which gives its objectives and guidelines of functioning.
The Board of Directors consists of 12 members and shareholders consist of 7 members, all of whom are Government nominees. All the shares are held by the Governor of Goa, except 7 shares which are held by its nominees.
The commercials aspect of the Goa Tourism industry, like providing accommodation, sightseeing tours, cruises, packages, etc, have been entrusted to the Corporation with the main object of developing tourism in a commercial way.

The Goa Tourism Development Corporation Goa GTDC conducts tours by road to cover every nook and corner of places of tourist interest in Goa. Tours are carefully designed to cater to all sorts of tourists living at the residencies which enjoy excellent locations all over the state of Goa. Tour groups are accommodated in buses and cars. The tour leaves from North Goa or South Goa, explores the entire state of Goa.
The Government transferred the Santa Monica launch on 13 May 1985 and an F.R.P. catamaran named as Shantadurga on 3 May 2003. The Goa Tourism Development Corporation Goa also added ML Poseidon on 12 February 2002.
