Santo Aleixo Church

History: This church was built in 1597 and rebuilt in 1647. St.Alex was declared the titular saint of the church by th Apostolic Brief of 13.1.1815. The entire façade was rebuilt in the late 18th century, probably around 1780.

Architectural notes:

• Mannerist style with Rococo features
• Large size, 5 bays x 3 storeys
• Pozzoan pediment crowns the gable
• Festooned image of saint in high relief on frontispiece
• Pilasters have floral moldings and openings are crowned by volute pediments
• Elegant finials of urn type
• Twin bell towers are octagonal in third storey as enlarged drum, capped by small cupola and lantern
