Sea Ports and Jetties

Port cities are located along a seacoast, which provides harbour to ships and boats from storms and rough water. The water front district of a city is called a port city. A port can be defined as a facility at the edge of an ocean, river, lake, for receiving ships and transferring cargo as well as travelers. Ports are specially designed to help in the loading and unloading vessels or ships. Ports also have the facility for landing cranes and forklifts. The cargoes, which arrive at a port by train and truck has to be consolidated at port and loaded onto a larger container ship for international transport.

Mormugao Port
The city of Mormugao in Goa state is situated on the west coast of India. Mormugao Harbour is one of the region's most impressive natural ports, offering an incredibly romantic view at sunset, especially when approaching from the waters of the Arabian Sea. Mormugao is a peaceful retreat from the larger cities, with its enchanting Portuguese architecture With the emergence of mining as a major industry in Goa, a Master Plan was evolved by the Portuguese for the development of Mormugao Port as an iron ore terminal, envisaging "dedicated berth fitted with Mechanical Ore Loading Plants, provided and financed by various iron ore exporters." In accordance with this, in 1959 M/s Chowgule & Co. Pvt. Ltd., was permitted to set up Asia's very first Mechanical Ore Handling Plant at Berth No.6, with a capacity of 1000 tph. Berth 7 was constructed as an adjunct to it.

The Liberation of Goa on December 19, 1961 marked the end of an epoch in Goan history.Mormugao Port, went through a fair amount of change as the emphasis shifted to development of infrastructure. A couple of years after liberation, the port was delinked from the Railway management. The main railway section from Vasco da Gama to the border of Goa was transferred to the Southern Railways. The Port however, operated its own railway system between Vasco da Gama interchange point and the harbour area.

Panjim jetty
Stay in Panjim is incomplete without a trip on one of Goa Tourism's Santa Monica cruise boats that take you either west to see a mesmerising sunset on Arabian Sea or east to the island of Chorao. One can enjoy a live performance on deck by local musicians, and everyone from crew to commuter is nice and jolly. If the cruise is an early evening one, grab a seat in the front of the ferry and watch the banks of Mandovi roll smoothly past, illuminated in fairy lights that cast a charming spell. GTDC also offers other boating tours from Panjim Jetty.

On Tuesdays and Fridays , go a refreshing backwater trip (9:30 am-4:30 pm) which includes a guided tour of a spice plantation and other nearby rural destinations of tourist interest. This is indeed a lifetime experience because of the close meeting that this ride offers and one gets a memorable chance to explore the vicinities of this palm-fringed state. You van even disembark and have the pleasure of meeting the people, talk with them about their lifestyle and get to know their day-to-day activities.
