Fort Chapora

Situated near the Arjuna beach on a towering and precarious cliff, the Fort Chapora in Goa was built by Adil Shah of Bijapur. It is also known as Shahpur. The name Chapora is give by the famous Chapora River that flows unceasingly near the fort. This once spectacular fort now lies in ruins. However, its rich history still keeps the fort alive in the minds of all those who see it. Fort Chapora dates back to 1617. Thus, the influence of Portuguese architecture is clearly seen in the red laterite stones, from which this fort is built. Fort Chapora also attracts visitors due to the fantastic view over Vagator beach, which is literally a feast for any city dweller’s eyes. Besides, its close proximity to picnic beaches like the Chapora beach makes it a highly appealing spot for travelers.
