| The extraction
of the coconut sap (toddy) is a death defying feat! The toddy
tapper climbs up the swaying palm, sometimes over 9mts tall, (using
little foot holds cut into the tree) right round the year, rain
or shine! He carries an extremely sharp chopper-like implement
to further cut the unopened pod of the coconut flowers, and a
pot with which to collect the sap. When fresh, this sap makes
a tasty drink. Fermented it is used as vinegar, and when distilled,
coconut feni is obtained.
