Sao Matias Church
Sao Matias Church Founded: 1590-97    Feast: 14th May History: The Church of Sao Matias was built between 1590 and 1597. The present church may be an extension of the ancient chapel dedicated to St. Anthony. This chapel is now joined to the church by an arch. Architectural notes: • Mannerist Neo-Roman style • Large size, 5 bays x 3 storeys • Front has a niche framed by a templet • Gable is topped by a swan-neck pediment • Main arched door is flanked by Corinthianized round columns • Finials of spear-and-ball type • Large twin bell towers with framed niched
