History: The Church of Santo Estevao was built in 1575 and had to be rebuilt twice in 1683 and 1739 after being destroyed in the Maratha attacks. The present edifice was erected in 1759, all vaulted and with seven small chapels on the sides.
Architectural notes:
• Mannerist style with Baroque features
• Large size, 5 bays x 4 storeys
• Cupoliform façade with prominent drum and lantern
• Engaged columns with combined base and elegant capitals flank the central bay
• Consoles used for cornices at all levels
• Framed niches in all storeys of bell towers
• Twin bell towers with spear finials
