History: The Church of Nerul was founded by the Franciscans in 1569. It was attacked thrice by the Marathas, but they were repelled by the sound of khoznne, (gunpowder crackers) and the sight of fictitious cannons made of palm trees placed on the porch roof! The church treasures some old paintings on wooden panels and on walls.

Architectural notes:

• Mannerist Neo-Roman style
• Large size, 3 bays x 3 storeys
• Frontispiece has large extended gable with stylized curves at base and a blind oculus
• Finials of acorn and basket-of-flames types
• Twin bell turrets with pagoda-like roofs
• Porch framed by arches, with balusters on flat roof
