Church of Holy Spirit

The Church of the Holy sprit was once such building which was first constructed in 1564 by the Jesuit missionaries. It was destroyed following the Muslim invasion of the Salcette in 1571, and construction was begun again only after the area had been firmly secured and funds rose. The Church of the Holy Spirit celebrates its Feast Day sometime in the final weeks of May, and in additional to a high mass on Sunday, an outdoor mela continues for the next five or six days.

This church lies at the site of the original Shree Damodar temple that was destroyed by the Portuguese and the deity was moved to Zambaulim. Today it stands as one of the finest examples of the Indian Baroque style and period of church building.
The outer facade consists of towers on either side with a central dome structure. The church has a beautiful interior replete with a pipe organ. The heavily decorated altars inside are dedicated to St. Peter and St. Michael.

The Church of the Holy Spirit in Margao is one of the South Goa's most notable edifices. Rows of mango trees line the rectangular madan in front, and Sunday mass draws a large crowd from the surrounding area who come dressed in their 'Sunday best’.Â
